Bonnes-Mares Robert Groffier 2004

Bonnes-Mares Robert Groffier 2004

Deeper and richer than the Chambolle 'Amoureuses', the Bonnes Mares has extraordinary depth and richness. The fruit comes from a .97 ha parcel of 40 year old vines; at harvest sugars were excellent at around 13.2% and acidities were near perfect. Total cuvaison was only 15 days, with abbreviated maceration and fewer punch downs. The wine was aged 50% in new wood.

Comments: "A classic young Bonnes Mares nose of blueberry and violets that display an interesting note of bitter cherry that can also be found on the round, rich, muscular and taut full-bodied flavors that are quite firmly structured and wrapped in a linear, intense and long finish. The flavors and finish are beautifully focused and there is good mid-palate fat to buffer the not inconsiderable tannic spine." --Burghound 93pts
Steve Tanzer Score: 92
Steve Tanzer Review: Medium red. Dark berries complicated by smoked meat and tar on the nose. Sweet, silky and broad, with the expressive gibiers and underbrush elements I find in most of these 2004s. Initially showed less verve than the Amoureuses but with aeration this fat fellow reveals plenty of inner-palate energy. Offers compelling sweetness and flesh for a 2004. Finishes long, with fine tannins.
Wine Spectator Score: 94
Wine Spectator Review: Creamy and concentrated, a perfect foil for the dense blackberry, licorice, mineral and spice flavors. Though powerful, this red also exhibits class and finesse. Real saturation on the finish and terrific length.
