Piedmont
This region of northwest Italy, close to the Alps and the Apennines, borders France and Switzerland. Piedmont has been famous for winemaking for thousands of years, beginning with the Greeks. Today Piedmont is teeming in magnificent wines that do honor to Italian enology. Piedmont produces some of the greatest Italian red wines, made with the Nebbiolo variety (from the Italian word “nebbia,” which means fog): Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara, Ghemme, and Nebbiolo d’Alba. The best known, however, is Barbera, with average tannin levels. The region is also known for excellent white wines, including Cortese di Gavi (dry, fruity, and light) and, with Moscato (Muscat) grapes, the popular Asti Spumante sparkling wine.
